What were you doing
on 22 November 1997? Were you alone in a hotel room in Sydney? Were you with
Sidney? Did you have a rope around your neck, feet on the floor, pornographic
material around you? Did you want to die? Did you have come on your thigh? Did
you? Come on your thigh? Did you want to die? Come on your thigh? Die, die.
Did you want to die, die, die? Did you?
The coroner investigating
the death of Michael Hutchence recorded a verdict of suicide. Many including
estranged fiancée Paula Yates believes this to be a cover up. "Michael
would never have left us," she claimed and would never choose to die in the
nude, even if he was suicidal. He was embarrassed by his pock-marked, scaly
skin and his pride would have rendered baring it unacceptable.
New South Wales
Coroner, Derek Hand said forensic and police inquiries revealed that the singer
had been drinking and using cocaine. He was also on Prozac the night he died.
"Considering the
evidence I am satisfied the deceased was in a severely depressed state on the
day that he died. I am satisfied that he did take his own life."
Within hours of
his death another rumour was circulating about a bizarre sexual practices called
auto asphyxia. Hutchence was a man given to sexual excess. Paula's boasts about
their practises left little to the imagination; showing a Sunday Times journalist
around their bedroom she'd discreetly left handcuffs by the bed. The fact that
Paula's boasts carried on after his death seemed to many to be in bad taste.
Still Hutchence according to Helena Christensen had the "Taj Mahal of crutches"
and give them enough rope…
And what of the
blonde actress visiting Hutchence with her boyfriend that night? The Daily Star
were the only tabloid to track down this so-called "boyfriend" and he had no
knowledge of the night and claimed he had split with the actress "months before."
So, was Hutchence
alone or with her? And if so, not wanting to be unfaithful to Paula did he get
out the old strangulation rope and prop himself up? Auto asphyxiation experts
claim the state of the room matched many similar scenes where this most dangerous
of sexual practise had gone over the edge. The timing between satisfaction and
asphyxiation is minuscule. Death comes in the flick of a wrist.
What is Autoerotic
Asphyxia? Hanging oneself to cut the oxygen supply and blood flow to the brain
while masturbating. Hypoxia (lack of oxygen) and ischemia (lack of blood flow)
contribute to the intensity of sexual arousal and orgasm. 1000 people die from
it each year approximately and many more AA deaths are, like Hutchence's labelled
as such because it saves embarrassment/ the feelings of family and friends.
What are the key signs?
Keep your feet
on the ground
--------------------------------------
In AA, feet are
often touching the ground pivoting for the practitioner to vary pressure, lifting
his body up and down.
The tie that binds
-----------------------
The ligature or
rope is tied in an elaborate manner. This is done so that an "escape mechanism"
is possible. Again pressure points on arms, legs and torso for applied sensation
to the neck.
Cover up
------------
Victim will have
pads around the neck to stop bruising and tell-tale abrasions.
Dirty Books
---------------
Pornography will
usually be present.
Motive
--------
What's my motivation
man? Many an actor has been heard to clarion call? But really, if they had no
motive, why the extreme act?
AA is a nightmare
for the life insurance racket. How to prove the victim was culpable? And is
the practise so unusual? How many of us played asphyxia games as kids? A recent
"hanging game" at Eton ended with a fatality. This game involved pulling on
school ties until choking. Sounds familiar from the job market. The key factor
in the game is the "victim" tapping the perpetrator as a stop signal. If he's
already gone the distance perhaps he will faint rather than react. Most of us
have held our breath under the bath water and tried to stay under as long as
possible. Not asphyxiation as such but lung extension / compression.
Suppressing oxygen
supply to increase sexual pleasure has been around forever and a day. Gigolos
in California have long practised the technique of squeezing the neck during
intercourse to keep their older women clients happy. But trusting your partner
is a little different from trusting yourself when the whole point of the kick
is how close to death you come. Most AA practitioners set up complicated escape
mechanisms enabling them to release themselves at the last possible second.
Fluctuations arise because of nerve impulses which respond to vascular changes.
In the neck there is a high percentage of barocepters, which are impulse pressure
points which sense, for instance, high blood pressure. Hanging reverses the
normal trend and a phenomenon called carotid sinus reflex occurs. Impulses are
sent to the brain, the heart ticks down, contraction ebbs and blood pressure
is lowered.
An AA practitioner
who is already cutting off blood flow and oxygen to the brain, will slow down
the heart to a point of unconsciousness. This occurs with such devastating rapidity
that often the victim has not time to release himself from the ligature.
Mind games
----------------
Discovering the
victim's mindset is key within all investigation and pontificating. Presumably
you have to be pretty jaded and depressed to want to attempt this technique
just to get off. Litman and Swearingen carried out research in the early 1970's
of 9 S&M and AA practitioners. Many had a deathwish and depressive disorders
and needed danger to orgasm. To return to Hutchence, it is common knowledge
that he was deeply depressed at being on his own in Australia. Paula Yates and
the kids unable to join him. Hutchence's phone call to Geldof, much of which
was nonsensical, included lines like,
"Your children
hate you man. I am their father, little man, when are you going to realise that?"
Hutchence felt
persecuted and feared for Paula Yates after her recent drink and drugs attempt
at self-destruction. Maybe he strung himself up, got to that point of release
and didn't have the will to live, enough. Enough. Paula Yates, hinted at this
diagnosis in a recent television interview and wanted their child to know that
Daddy didn't leave her but died in a bizarre accident. I doubt either option
will make her too happy but still.
Don't try this
at home, kids.
Mummy?
Yes.
How did daddy die?
