The government of Niger has declared an emergency and is appealing for help. Upwards of 3.6 million people in Niger, and Burkina Faso, West Africa, are in critical need of food and water. The UN reports that more than 800,000 children are suffering from hunger, including 150,000 children who show signs of severe malnutrition, after drought and locust plagues devastated crops throughout the country.
Every year almost 200,000 children in Niger die from preventable diseases and almost 70% of the country's 12 million people do not have access to health services.
