First single after the orgiastic splendour
that was The Good Will Out sees Embrace stripping down the mix. Recorded
in a Gloucestershire mansion for a live feel, most the tracks on the new album
were done in one take. Let's hope they're better than 'Hooligan'. They got a
distorted repeat thang going on guitar and then the vocals come in under the
unremarkable rhythm. A bit of Kazoo and whistling beef up the "Yeah, yeah, yeah"
chorus but it feels like a filler, not a single. The initial appeal of Embrace
was the underworked feel their music conveyed, vocals just about holding it
together, big choruses and heartwrenching lyrics. Come Back To What You Know
was a triumph and the Glastonbury show their finest hour. 'Hooligan' actually
sounds like a demo rather than having a "demo-like" sound. Disappointing.
